Tom Barrett Newsletter, "Delivering for Hard-Working Families Across Mid-Michigan!" May 18, 2025
"The people of mid-Michigan sent me to Congress to do the hard work necessary to lower the cost of living, secure our border, and unleash American energy. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1) we passed this week makes good on those promises and more.
Not only does H.R. 1 deliver the largest tax cut in history for the working class and small businesses, it eliminates taxes on tips and overtime pay, makes American-made cars built in Michigan more affordable, provides significant relief for seniors collecting Social Security benefits, and boosts the child tax credit to support families across the country.
This legislation also strengthens the integrity of Medicaid, preserving it for mothers, children, people with disabilities, and seniors who need it most – not illegal immigrants and able-bodied adults who choose not to work. While some are dishonestly trying to scare people into believing the sky is falling, I remain focused on protecting the most vulnerable, reinvesting in America’s future, and putting more money back in people’s pockets."
To: Representative Tom Barrett. You have now transformed yourself from a mere flunky for the authoritarian Trump agenda to an outright liar for that agenda. Your latest newsletter is proof of that.
You claim that "some are dishonestly trying to scare people" about Trump's HR1 which you voted for. Let's count up the dishonesty, shall we?
First lie: Trump campaigned that he would not cut Medicaid, H.R. 1 proves he was lying. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office found that H.R. 1 would trigger $535 billion in cuts to Medicaid. So, the only dishonesty here, is yours.
A second lie: H.R.1 will "boosts the child tax credit." Actually 4.5 million citizen and legal permanent resident children will be ineligible for the CTC under H.R. 1. Congratulations, Rep. Barrett: you are hurting vulnerable children and lying about it.
Third lie: H.R. 1 is the "largest tax cut in history for the working class and small businesses." In actuality the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center found that The lowest 20% of earners average an additional 0.8% more money and the top 20% get 3.8% more. The break on tips/overtime taxes does not come close to making this even.
The idea you are working for the people of your district rather than the ultra wealthy is laughable. In the next election all these lies will come home to roost as Michiganders realize your rank dishonesty and servile nature to Trump's corrupt presidency.

Dear Mr. Jackson,
Thank you for taking the time to contact my office regarding your opposition to changes to Medicaid in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1). I appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with me.
The people of mid-Michigan sent me to Congress to do the hard work necessary to lower the cost of living, secure our border, and unleash American energy. Unfortunately, waste, fraud, and abuse across the federal government has stood in the way of achieving those goals for too long, which is why I helped pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act on May 22, 2025.
This legislation does not cut Medicaid for people who need it most. In fact, it strengthens the integrity of the program, preserving it for mothers, children, people with disabilities, and seniors – not illegal immigrants and able-bodied adults who choose not to work. It does this by removing 1.4 million illegal immigrants and 1.2 million recipients who are already ineligible under current law from the Medicaid program. While some try to scare people into believing the sky is falling, I remain focused on protecting the most vulnerable, reinvesting in America’s future, and putting more money back in people’s pockets.
Not only that, H.R. 1 delivers the largest tax cut in history for the working class and small businesses, it eliminates taxes on tips and overtime pay, makes American-made cars built in Michigan more affordable, provides significant relief for seniors collecting Social Security benefits, and boosts the child tax credit to support families across the country. While we may disagree on this issue, please know I will keep your concerns about this legislation in mind as it continues to work its way through the legislative process. My top priority as your advocate in Congress is to listen to you and lead on solutions you can count on, so please stay in touch. Rep: Barrett:
Your claim that the atrocious Tax bill targets waste and fraud is completely unsupported. There isn't a shred of evidence of any analysis of fraud or waste among the cuts.
Your lie about tax cuts for working class Americans is irresponsible. 40% of tipped workers don't make enough money to pay Federal tax at all and receive no benefit at all. Businesses are already using the "tax cut" for tipped workers as a rationale to move employees to the "tipped worker" category meaning the workers are screwed again.
The 1.2 million workers you brag about removing from Medicaid are RESTAURANT WORKERS! Even if they receive a "tax cut" there is absolutely no way that cut would allow them to pay for their health care. I want you to realize that you voted to kill people. Hard working people will die.
Why will they die? So you could give a $600 billion dollar tax break to the richest rich in the US. I guess you really wanted them to buy a second ocean-going yacht.
Why will they die? So you can force your children and grandchildren to pay off the $4 TRILLION dollars you are adding to deficit.
You will surely lose your job in 2026 given this performance. You will suffer no consequences for killing and maiming the poorest people in this country.
